Mysterious Australia Book
Rex Gilroy, widely known as "Australia's Charles Fort" for his life-long fascinationand
research into all aspects of Australian unexplained mysteries and enigmasof our prehistory, dares (like
his late great American counterpart) to question theblind dogmas of scientific conformitism with
evidence for which universitytextbooks have no answers. His files bulge with thousands of reports on all aspects of Australian 'unexplained' phenomena and historical, zoological and other enigmas.
With this, his first book, Rex Gilroy hopes to inspire other future researchers to follow his
example and dare to question long-established dogmas of our prehistory and, like him, reveal evidence
for long-hidden mysteries about which the scientific establishment would prefer we knew nothing. Acknowledgements.
I wish to express my gratitude to the following people for their practical help over the
years, which enabled me to expand and elucidate my many and varied researches.
Don Boyd, former editor of Psychic Australian, who has been urging me to write a
book for years; author Frances Pollon, to whom I am indebted for her invaluable advice;
John Dean, for his assistance in our original measuring, photographing and exploratory work
on the ‘Gympie Pyramid’ and other ancient sites in that district in the 1970s.
Don Boyd, Geoff Holland and Evan Rainer, with whom I have spent many happy
hours on late-night sit-outs on Kings Tableland watching for UFOs, gone in search of
yowies, thylacines and panthers in the Blue Mountains bushland, and trampled through
Dinosaur Swamp in search of its scaly inhabitants.
Don Garrad, with whom I have searched for lost cave systems in the rugged New
England ranges.
Fred From, who is an invaluable assistant in my search for evidence of
the Australian lost civilisation.
A special thank-you must also go to Judy Paton for her encouragement in writing this
book; and also my dear friend and fellow old-movies collector, John Wain, who did not live
to see this book completed.
And, finally, I wish to thank my ever-patient, loyal and understanding wife and fellow
researcher, Heather. Together we have searched Cape York for pyramids, panthers and
yowies, explored central Queensland for fossilised dinosaur remains, and investigated the
haunts of "Burrunjor". Together we have frozen on a Bass Strait island in mid winter,
investigated the Warrnambool sandhills for the mysterious mahogany ship buried there, and
searched Australia for evidence of ancient races. As a team, we have been literally everywhere
in Australia in search of all manner of 'unexplained' mysteries.
We have searched for the Kiwi “yowie” or “Moehau Monster”, and for signs that the
small scrub-moa might still survive in New Zealand's Fiordlands wilds. We are about to make
our fourth [eighth in 2004] expedition there. Our life, for these reasons, is never dull, and I
am forever grateful for Heather's help and encouragement.
A very special thanks to our leading ‘Gilroy field assistant and researcher’,
Greg, who also assisted in the preparation of this book with the scanning
of the photos and other computer work. Greg is also our webmaster who has
produced our excellent web sites.
Since this book was first published by NEXUS Publishing in 1995 much has
happened which makes republishing of this extremely popular book necessary.
So many new discoveries have been made concerning evidence of pre-Aboriginal
stone-age races in Australia, that the authors have found it necessary, so as not to upset the
original chapter texts except for a couple of minor alterations, such as revised dates] to add
many new photos of fossil hominid skull-types and footprints, as with other sections of this
book, but with often lengthy captions containing important information.
Thus more photographs have been added to the UFO chapters, those dealing with
lost cave systems, and the Cryptozoology section, as well as the chapter dealing with the
Yowie. Those readers interested in our ‘unwritten’ history of discovery, exploration and
colonisation by maritime civilisations of the ancient world, will not be disappointed by the
large number of photos dealing with relics and pyramids discovered by the Gilroys
throughout Australia. In the first edition the chapter dealing with the Australian ‘lost’ megalithic civilisation,
like other sections of the book, had been flawed due to the deletion of a large number of
photographs.
This oversight has now happily been corrected, and the chapter on the ‘lost’
civilisation of Uru is represented by more than enough images, to further amaze the reader at
what hidden archaeological treasures this continent possesses, to rival anything similar
overseas. Since “Mysterious Australia” was first published, [after which it quickly sold out!] the
appeal for copies had been truly phenomenal. So much so that the authors have heard stories
of thefts [borrowings] by relatives or friends of owners from their book shelves; altercations
over the failure of borrowers to return copies to their owners; even a ‘bidding war’ between
an American by long-distance phone to one bookseller, and a woman at the counter, over the
single second-hand copy he had advertised [the Australian buyer won!]
So fear not readers, we the authors/publishers now present you with this revised, updated
edition, with more than enough photographic content to satisfy you!
Republishing “Mysterious Australia” has been our intention ever since we formed
URU Publications in 2000. However, as a sequel has long been intended, we thought it
doubly important that the original be republished first, so as to refresh the public’s memory so to speak.
And, as so many new developments in the research of Australian fossil human
history have transpired since 1995, we felt it necessary to up-date that section of the book in
particular. “Mysterious Australia” has been called “the book that changed our lives”. Since its
publication thinking Australians have, as never before, realised just how many natural and ‘unexplained’ mysteries, how many hidden relics of our hitherto unrealised fossil hominid
past, and evidence of ancient civilisation contact with our shores, are to be found here.
Since that little book first created a sensation – and the expected storm of protests
from irate university-based academics both here and overseas – researchers of the ‘Unexplained’ across the globe have finally realised that Australia has far more than just
deserts, Aborigines and kangaroos to offer!
With the republishing of this [revised] edition of this classic Australian book of
hidden wonders, URU Publications – which has also published the equally successful “Pyramids in the Pacific – The Unwritten History of Australia” and “Giants From the
Dreamtime – The Yowie in Myth and Reality” – is pleased to inform the reader that we are
committed to continue publishing books concerning the vast array of historical,
archaeological and Cryptozoological etc phenomena to be found right here in Australia and
in our near-island neighbours.
“Mysterious Australia” is of particular importance to me, because thanks to NEXUS
this book made me a published author of International renown, something that the Internet
has continued to do.
