YOWIE'S, huge hairy ape-like creatures are roaming dense bush near Sydney, a Blue Mountains natralist claims.

Mr Rex Gilroy, of Katoomba, is convinced Australia has a Yowie-a creature similar to America's Big Foot and the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayan Alps.

Mr Gilroy has checked out more than 3,000 reported sightings of the strange beast over 20- years.) "I am certain there is a Yowie - a creature that lives in thick forests along Australia's east coast," Mr Gilroy said.

"There are between 400 and 600 of them and they are between 5-10 feet tall and weigh about 400 Ibs." Mr Gilroy is so convinced of the existence of the beast that he has a set up a "Yowie Research Centre", at the Kedumba Nature Display at Echo Point.

He said Yowies have been sighted by farmers, motorists, truckdrivers, bushwalkers, train drivers and even policemen in remote bush areas.

Yowies

He said Yowies have been sighted by farmers, motorists, truckdrivers, bushwalkers, train drivers and even policemen in remote bush areas.

Only a month ago some schoolboys stumbled across large fresh footprints in muddy ground in the Jamieson Valley where Yowies have often been sighted.

"On' an April afternoon in 1970 I saw a Yowie about eight feet tall lumbering through the bush in the same area.

"As far back as 1875 there have been hundreds of sightings of Yowies in the valleys near Katoomba," he' said.

Mr Gilroy will soon lead an expedition of a dozen people to Coonamble to check out recent sightings there. Truck drivers, farmers and even a couple changing a flat tyre reportedly saw a Yowie in the last few weeks.

So far nobody has been able to get a clear photograph of the creature.
"But I am sure he exists and oneday I will prove it," he said. "People often laugh at me because of my beleif but I know there is a Yowie - I have seen one myself."
