The URU

Upon ancient watercourses Aborigines once sailed their rafts and canoes, which they shared, they once said, with “culture-heroes”. These “culture-heroes” were the Uru. Interestingly, early European settlers first learnt the name “bou-mar-ang” from the Turawul Aboriginal tribe of the Georges River district. The name in fact, applied to the returning boomerang, which was used in western and eastern Australia and nowhere else.

The Turawul people said their ancestors had obtained the returning boomerang and other cultural items from the “culture-heroes” and it was these “culture heroes” who gave them many of their religious beliefs and practices in the long-ago “Dreamtime”. Descriptions of these great culture-bringers elsewhere describe them as a white, ie pale-skinned race. Aboriginal myth and legend Australia-wide identifies the Uru as Sun-worshipping ‘Serpent Beings’ and the creators of Man.

The tribespeople of the Kimberley district, Western Australia recall them as “worshippers of serpents” and in Central Australia they are linked with Uluru [Ayers Rock], which to the Aborigines means “Serpent of the Rock”. The Aborigines described them as a tall, pale [ie white] skinned, blue-eyed race.

These traditions are mirrored in those of the Solomon Islanders, who claimed “Serpent Beings” inter-bred with their ancestors, having arrived from the great land to the south of New Guinea. Mummified and skeletal remains of these “Serpent Beings” are said by Central Australian Aborigines to lie hidden in secret burial places, as do the New Guinea and Solomon Island natives. Such claims are also made by the Fijian, Tongan and Maori peoples.

The proposition that an advanced Stone-Age civilisation could have evolved in Australia will seem absurd to people reared on the great archaeological discoveries of Europe, the Middle and Near-East. That I claim this was the ‘mother’ civilisation, from which those of the Old and New World took root, will sound even more absurd.

This is all to be expected when we consider that, until quite recently, Australia was largely overlooked by overseas historians and archaeologists, as a land offering little of importance to human prehistory researchers. Then came Kow Swamp, Lake Mungo and many other major discoveries, and with them the realisation that Australia was the birthplace of modern humans.

It is my contention that the ‘lost’ megalithic ‘mother’ civilisation of Uru sprang from these early Homo sapiens, and that it was the origin of the Atlantis legend of later centuries. An aura of mystery enshrouds the lost civilisation of Uru. The silent stone circles, menhirs, alignments and carved stone heads of once-venerated gods that stand weathering in the harsh Australian sunlight, for so long overlooked by scholars are about to receive the recognition they deserve.
